movie reviews(online)

I'm trying to go to the movies more. I'm lucky there's a number of independent theatres in my city. I'm going to try to write a brief review for each one that I've seen so far.

April, 2025

This month I guess I'm only doing silly movies or something? I saw the minecraft movie... honestly the theatre experience was pretty great. No popcorn throws or fights though. Classically unhinged kids movie I guess? Like hoodwinked levels lol.

March, 2025

In a very cute turn of events, I saw Roman Holiday this weekend. What an adorable film! When it comes to movies I don't know much, but I do know that I have historically loved the constuming of Edith Head. This movie is no different. Very sweet! I'm so glad I finally had the chance to see this.

I saw Universal Language again. This is by far my favourite movie that I've seen this year and I'd love to own a physcal version.

My boyfriend and I fianlly finished the Godfather, parts 1 and 2. Kind of eerie seeing some of the italian mannerisms that remind me so much of my nonna today and my nonno when he was still around. Various times in both movies it was like I was watching someone act as someone in my family despite the fact that we are far from southern italian and we were serfs to the land for generations from my understanding. Anyways really cool fo finally see both of them. Freaking long lol. I have a friend that wants all of us to watch megalopolis together so we can see where Coppola started and where he landed. Shout out to Gia though, the Last Showgirl was great.

February, 2025

Early this month I had the chance to see The Last Showgirl. I found this movie to be a thoughtful and very sweet character portrait. It was beautifully shot, and I still find myself thinking about Shelly walking around the showgirl icons, like Collosus' of Rhodes, on the strip and what her internal processes must have been knowing that her show was ending, and likely feeling very small, but slowly more and more free. Would recommend, really lovely conversations on what it means to be an artist.

Mid-month, I saw Mulholland Drive. This was the first time I saw the movie and it was amazing! I did in fact get jump scared multiple times throughout the film. I tend to read the wikipedia pages (plots too) on movies ahead of time. I had read the plot of this film, years ago and was just waiting to see it. I do admit I was anticipating for the switch to take place, and it was very satisfying when it did. Over all the movie was very fulfilling to finally view. I'm a Twin Peaks fan, so getting to see another peice of Lynch's work is nice. I think everyone misses that guy. Make sure you drink a hot drip coffee for him.

Around month end I had a chance to see Universal Lanuguage. This movie was amazing and I want to watch it again and again. It was heartwarming, charming, and funny, all while maintaining a sense of intrigue. I'm not much of a "movie person" and I don't know my directors the way that "movie people" might, and I think there is something special about this type of niavete because when I come accross something that is abosutely breathtaking, like this film, it is seredipitious. I would like to purchase a physical version of this when it becomes available.

January, 2025

This January I saw A Complete Unknown and the Brutalist.

A Complete Unknown was often funny. I frequently found myself asking if the director pulled Timothee aside and told him to "really embody bob, just try to be bob", and at that point he would just throw the pitched accent as hard as he possibly could. I think that part that killed me the most was when Bob was passing by a drunken Johnny Cash who has just poorly parked (crashed) his car in front of a motel. There where points where he was nearly muppetlike. Most of the other actors held it together tho. Long movie.

The Brutalist on the other hand was quite serious. I found the sweeping long shots to be very visually stunning. Apart from that I did find the story kind of weak. I think it would have been much more interesting to conver the dissolution of Bauhaus under the n**i regime and Lazlo's experience of this, as opposed to just the coveting and achievement of the american dream and a z*****t outcome. Intermission was cool.

I'm using *** to reduce the chance that anyone from said ideologies will find me here - thanks for understanding, I'm a worrier lol
